🟣 Produce with SEGGER

Phase 6: Make your Product ready for your Customer

Produce with SEGGER Production Programmers ensures that approved embedded software is safely and reliably brought into mass production. Developers configure the programming process, integrate custom production and security data, and automate the flashing of target systems. Successful programming is then verified and documented. This results in a fast, reproducible, and traceable process—from the first production unit to mass production.

What SEGGER Production Programmers Deliver

With the production process with Production Programmers from SEGGER, the firmware moves beyond the traditional development environment and enters mass production. The focus shifts from debugging and testing to a fast, secure, and reproducible programming process for every device produced.

With SEGGER’s Production Programmers - particularly the Flasher family - the development setup is transformed into a reproducible production process. The key point here is that “development” should no longer take place on the production line. The previously qualified process is automated as much as possible and repeated identically for every device.

In a typical Embedded Project, these Steps are followed:

1️⃣

Prepare Production Firmware

  • Select the approved firmware version
  • Define production data and configurations
  • Create a flash image for mass production
  • Ensure that only approved software is programmed

2️⃣

Configure the programming process

  • Configure the target microcontroller and flash memory
  • Specify the programming interface, e.g., JTAG or SWD
  • Define erase, program, and verification steps
  • Optimize production parameters for the programming process

3️⃣

Integrate production data

  • Program serial numbers or unique device IDs
  • Load MAC addresses, calibration data, or device configurations
  • Manage individual data for each device produced
  • Ensure traceability between the device, firmware, and production data

4️⃣

Configure security

  • Securely provision keys, certificates, or other security data
  • Activate the microcontroller’s protection mechanisms
  • Disable debug or programming interfaces as needed
  • Prevent unauthorized reading or manipulation of the firmware

5️⃣

Program firmware

  • Connect the target to the production programmer
  • Automatically transfer firmware to flash memory
  • Optimize programming for high volumes and short cycle times
  • Program multiple targets in parallel as needed

6️⃣

Verify programming

  • Verify programmed flash content
  • Perform checksums or other integrity checks
  • Unambiguously confirm successful programming
  • Detect defective devices and remove them from the production process

7️⃣

Log production data

  • Document programming results
  • Record the serial number, firmware version, and other relevant data
  • Save the timestamp and production status
  • Enable traceability for quality assurance and service

8️⃣

Monitor and optimize mass production

  • Analyze programming times and error rates
  • Identify production issues
  • Implement firmware updates into production in a controlled manner
  • Scale the programming process for higher production volumes
